Rostock is in the north of Germany on the Warnow river in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It was part of the German Democratic Republic until 1990 and was its main seaport on the Baltic Sea. It has lost that privilege since the reunification and despite restoration the city. That said it is a delightful place to visit. It maintains some of its original medieval walls and gates such as the Kröpeliner Tor. The prettiest area is around the Neuer Markt that maintains a mixture of Brick Gothic thirteenth century and fifteenth century gable buildings. Other excellent examples of the brick Gothic style in Rostock is the Kerkhofhaus and the Marienkirche church.
