Essen lies in the West of Germany on the Ruhr river. The city has an industrial heritage due to the Krupp family that hail from here and their nineteenth century family home has been turned into a concert hall. Evidence of the industrial period can be seen in the Zeche und Kokerei Zollverein coal mine of the early nineteen hundreds that has been declared a World Heritage Site, being the biggest coal mine in the world. The fourteenth century cathedral, the Essener Munster, has some wonderful artefacts dating from more than one thousand years ago. The city has absorbed two medieval towns, Kettwig and Werden that are located in the south of the city.
