Chemnitz is a city in the East of Germany in the state of Saxony. It is situated in the lower part of the Ore Mountains and is named after the river that runs through it, the Chemnitz river. During the post war era it was called Karl Marx city and underwent 'Stalinist planning' leaving the city drab and functional added to the destruction of the war and the lack of restoration.
