Public transport is a great way to get around the city, Berlin
has the best public transport system in Germany, with the U-Bahn
(underground), S-Bahn (underground express), buses and trams running
from 4am-12.30am. Night owls are catered for with a network of night
buses marked with the letter ‘N’. At the weekend, the
U9 and the U15 U-Bahn lines run all night. It’s worth bearing
in mind that a trip on the S-Bahn from Zoologischer Garten to Alexanderplatz,
or a ride on the famous 100 bus can be an excellent way to get to
know the city and its many monuments.
If the weather is fine, the ideal way to see the city is by bike.
Bicycles rule the streets of Berlin, and the many cycle paths marked
by a red strip on the ground are respected by car drivers unlike
many other European cities. If you’re on foot, be ware of
walking on a cycle path as it often can be danderous. Outside the
rush hour, bikes are allowed in the central coaches of the U and
S-Bahn, you just have to buy an extra ticket.
To hire a bike, call: Bike City @ 28 30 48 48
Given the size of the city it is not necessarily a bad idea to
hire a car. When the rush hour is over (5-7pm) traffic is Berlin
is relatively calm. A wide choice of car hire companies can be found
around Alexanderplatz.
Taxis can be recognised by their characteristic yellow/cream colour
but they can only accommodate up to three people. If you call a
taxi by phone you have to add DM2 to the fare so flagging one down
is much more practical and easy to do.
